Making Old Homes Feel New: Adding Cool Stuff to Old Houses

One of our staff writers took a client couple to view an older home (built in the 1930's). With the couple came their 5th grade twins. The twins were not pleased that their parents were looking at an older home and they feared that their modern/electronic devices would not work in such a house. This interaction brought our staff writer back into the office to converse with others. That conversation led to this blog post, collectively written and edited by five of the staff members here at The One Realtor. One of our writers may have gone a little Ninja Turtle with the "cool" wording.

Hey there, 5th graders! Have you ever visited a really old house and wondered how people used to live there without all the cool stuff we have today? Well, guess what? You can actually add modern amenities to a historic home to make it super cool and comfy!

1. Lights, Camera, Action! - Installing Modern Lighting

Historic homes often have old-fashioned lights, but you can easily upgrade them to modern ones. LED bulbs are energy-efficient and come in all sorts of colors. You can even get smart bulbs that you can control with your voice or phone. Say "lights on" and voila, your room will glow!

2. Wi-Fi Everywhere - Setting Up Internet

You might think old houses and Wi-Fi don't mix, but they totally can! Install Wi-Fi routers in different rooms to make sure your internet reaches everywhere. This way, you can play games, watch videos, and do your homework from anywhere in your home.

3. Climate Control - Heating and Cooling

Old houses might not have central heating and air conditioning, but you can add them. Install a furnace for warm air in the winter and an air conditioner for cool air in the summer. You'll always be comfy no matter the weather!

4. Cooking Up Fun - Modern Kitchen Appliances

Old kitchens can be fun to look at, but they might not have all the fancy appliances you're used to. You can update your kitchen with a new stove, fridge, and dishwasher. Plus, you can add a microwave to heat up snacks in a flash!

5. Clean and Fresh - Modern Bathrooms

Old bathrooms might not be as shiny and clean as you'd like. But you can make them feel brand new! Install a modern toilet, a fancy sink, and a shower with hot water whenever you want. No more waiting for the water to get warm!

6. Stay Safe - Modern Security

Keep your historic home safe with modern security systems. You can have cameras outside to see who's at the door and alarms that beep if anyone tries to break in. Your home will be super secure!

7. Paint and Decorate - Make it Your Own

Now that you have all these modern amenities, you can make your historic home look awesome too! Paint the walls in your favorite colors, hang up cool posters, and add comfy furniture. Your home will be just the way you like it.

8. Ask for Help - Get Grown-Up's Help

Remember, when you're adding modern stuff to a historic home, it's important to get help from grown-ups. They know how to do things safely and make sure everything works right. So, ask your parents or guardians for assistance.

Conclusion

Adding modern amenities to a historic home is like giving it a super fun makeover. You can enjoy all the cool stuff you love while still living in a piece of history. So, go ahead and make your old house feel brand new!
